My Experience
From my earliest years I have made things, my first project on the sewing machine was a rag doll called Katrina when I was nine (who sits on my bookshelf!) As a teenager I made my school uniform and quite a lot of my own clothes ; I was particularly proud of a lovely orange skirt with unpressed pleats and a lace frill!
Having made lots of children's clothes for my boys, dungarees were a must, I wanted to pursue my sewing career to a far higher skills level. In 2004 I graduated from Bournemouth University with a BA (Hons) in Fashion & Textiles and after working part time as a tutor I went to work for Gracie Burnett, Clothes without Chemicals. Here I honed my skills on soft tailored jackets and bridal wear, making clothes for the very well connected and exhibiting the work I made for Gracie at Origin (Somerset House) for several years. This work was based on naturally dyed wool and silks, with a particular emphasis on contrast colours and original textures teamed with classic jacket shapes to flatter all ages.
Since 2010 I have been working under my own name making a wide variety of garments and accessories for a diverse range of clients. My client groups include ladies and gentlemen with tastes ranging from the very classic to really quite playful.
In 2011 I graduated with a Teaching degree in Textiles from The Open University. I now teach Textiles in school part time as required and run Sewing Skills workshops at Sew Your Own in Gillingham, Dorset. I also offer one to one tuition on a wide variety of textiles and sewing based topics as required. If you are interested personal tuition to develop your skills please contact me. I can tailor my tuition to suit both beginners and those at an intermediate level wanting to advance.
